     Nellis AFB Main Gate.
Nellis AFB

During the past two months, as I operated out of the Nellis Air Force Base, adjacent to North Las Vegas, I kept observing parked fighter squadrons from NATO, and other allied foreign countries, along with U.S. Navy and Marine squadrons.  Obviously they were all here to participate in the USAF’s “Red Flag” combat training exercise.

But why the Navy and Marines?  As they had their own “TOPGUN” fighter training program in California.  What was so unique about “Red Flag?”

Today my “burning question” got answered, and it scared the shit out of me.

The “Red Eagles” Squadron, who flew the Russian Fighters out of “Silverbow” for “Red Flag.”

“Red Flag” was the sole fighter training exercise where western squadrons could go head-to-head with real Soviet Fighters!  Unwittingly, I had been dropped right in the middle of a USAF classified black project!

Where Mrs. Chisholm’s little boy had no desire whatsoever to be, dear reader!  And how did I end up here?  Honestly, it all began quite innocently, in my attempt to avoid the dreaded East Coast snowbound winter.
